Finding compatible replacement alternator

Yeah, those little details like form factor and mounting matter. :) I've been through a big ordeal just replacing the alternator on the BMW X5. They've used both Bosch and Valeo. They look virtually identical, but they require different pulleys. The different pulleys you could put on either one, it will fit right on, look at it, it looks fine. The difference is slight, so you could put it on and never notice. Until you go to put the belt on and see that the pulley is 1/4" off, out of plane with the other pulleys, if you have the wrong pulley. Even worse, some alternators come with pulleys some without. Some that are supposed to have the pulley, when you go to pick it up, it does not. Of course once you know this you know what to look for, but if you don't it can be a big surprise.

I think I may have said earlier I'm in the beginning throes of keeping eyes out to replace it...it's getting harder to find even the JLG regular parts like controllers.

So far, it's still functional; I just don't what it to be sitting on the place here when it turns into 12,000 lb of doorstop--I'll let that be somebody else's headache if I can. :)

A glitch of still undetermined origin kept one side of the steering hydraulics from opening last summer one day when I was really needing to move it...it happened to be in the yard near the house when it happened; fortunately I could manage to get it to a place not too unhandy with the limited steering but if something truly major dies and parts are as hard to get as are, I'd rather spend a little more now and get a newer machine and start the cycle over.

Plus, I've discovered that a 50-60' reach instead of 40' would make a big difference in finishing up some tasks on the barn roof...like putting the weather vane back up on the top of the cupola.
