The weekend flyer from Lowe's has some interesting Formica and laminate countertops for those trendy types that like the mortuary look of stainless steel and stone in their kitchens. This might offer some $$ relief for the DIY'er having sticker shock and installation hassles with the $75 a square foot quarried stone product. Those of you with a pragmatic take on home repair go to Lowes.com/countertops and have a look. Likely the other box stores will have similar products by now. It amazes me that people will pay $1500 or more for a 2' x 10' countertop that can be had as a postform laminate for under $60 that is more user friendly. But, why not, it's only money, or credit, whatever. Enjoy.
