Cheat Grass

Cheat grass has taken over Northwestern Nevada over the last sixty years. It seems to be controlled by range fires. That won't work for you. Good luck! Toxic solutions are available, and your descendants may even be able to sue on your behalf. I'm considering zeroscaping, not xeriscaping, for age-related reasons. That might work.

And grazing, if they can get the stinkin' BLM (Bureau of Land Management) out of the way

Depending upon your situation, deer, antelope, bighorn sheep and cattle are said to love a salt lick. Some of those are sure to graze on cheat grass. It'd be a win-win. Where's a Basque sheepherder when you need one?

I have seriously thought about that too

I had never heard of it but reminds me of problem I have with Japanese stilt grass. It is easy to pull but because it puts out so many seeds pulling just results in more seeds sprouting. Best result I have is with pre-emergences and in my case they are the same as for crabgrass.

Can you recommend the least toxic to humans pre-emergent? I tried some corn based one once. It was useless.

Not familiar with the chemicals used off hand. I just buy the fertilizer that contains them and spread around April 1 here. Not worried about toxicity as I am not going to eat them and have no kids or dogs to run around where spread.

You can buy the pure chemicals and spray. Not sure about cheat grass but Japanese stilt grass may need more than one treatment per year.
