bearing vs angle.

Only for those who really care. If you don't really care, don't complain:



To measure bearing, I've always thought it's the number of degrees going clockwise from North, and apparently I'm still right.



But did you know that there is also "angle in standard position", which I had never heard of, despite taking 10th grade geometry, and one guy measures starting at East going CCW? . "Standard Position: An angle is in standard position if its vertex is located at the origin and one ray is on the positive x-axis. The ray on the x-axis is called the initial side and the other ray is called the terminal side."

you go CW you get a negatively numbered angle.



But another video gets a number by starting with west and going CCW. He doesn't name his number.

I was trying to use the Chrome add-on Protractor , which works really well and easily, but has no text to go with it. It allows you to put tha start and stop of the angle to be meaured in any direction, and to move the compass around google maps. I was trying to verify the numeric part of the name of the Nike Missile Base I just discovered near me, Mike Missile site BA-79, where BA means Baltimore and 79 is the angle of the line between the two. Except that didn't seem to be the angle, it was more like 69, but going CCW.

I found out the army has a still different way to calculate angles, "Alternatively, the US Army defines the bearing from point A to point B as the smallest angle between the ray AB and either north or south, whichever is closest. The bearing is expressed in terms of 2 characters and 1 number: first, the character is either N or S; next is the angle numerical value; third, the character representing the perpendicular direction, either E or W. The bearing angle value will always be less than 90 degrees.[1]"



This almost accounts for it, but if you do use 79^, you end up at Charles and 25th St, about 2 miles north of the center of town (though I don't kn ow exactly where the center is.) But there is nothing special about Charles and 25th St, To get to the center of town you need 69^. Maybe they misnamed it to mislead the Soviets? So they couldn't find it and bomb it? (Did you know they printed maps of Moscow with whole areas, important ones, left out and the adjoining areas squeezed together so it looked like nothing was missing, in case the enemy invaded again.)



In nautical navigation the relative bearing of an object is the clockwise angle from the heading of the vessel to a straight line drawn from the observation station on the vessel to the object.


Azimuth has no bearing on this heading .
