I've got 19 sqft of backsplash that needs to be installed. I have the tile/grout etc. The existing backsplash installed 2 years ago is very thin veneer like which should be easy to remove. 4 power outlet cutouts, nothing else fancy.
First quote was $1000, which @ 50+$ sqft seems completely irrational.
What is rough going rate for this?

I agree that is ridiculous. Labor only, assuming 1 guy, 2 trips, $400-500? Why not just do it yourself? The only trick is cutting the tiles around the electrical boxes. Rent a wet saw and get some extra tile because you will usually screw up a few on your first try. Get a bag of spacers.
I did a ceramic tile floor myself a while back. They didn't have a wet saw to rent, I got one of those sliding blade tile cutters. I broke more than I cut right. So I got a pencil, marked the cuts on the rest, and went back to the store. They cut them all on their wet saw for 10 cents each. And yes the spacers really helped.
Then why not do it yourself sounds better. If you can get tile cuts for a dime each, this is just sticking them on the wall and grouting them. Spend the grand on something else.
