Those are very popular in europe. Search on rolladen shutters. The germans first came up with them. They are great for storms and also if you want your bedroom to stay dark until you get up, not when the sun gets up :-)
Have had these on my home in Canada for 20 years, no problems with raising or lowering, good for darkening room for sleeping etc, excellent quality
If you just want to run them up and down for storms or when you are going up north for the summer they make an adapter for a cordless drill.
That is not quite the same as laying in bed and hitting the remote but it is easier than the hand crank.
