Antifreeze smell

2004 xterra, 59000 miles. Smelling antifreeze when up to temp. Head gasket? No leaks. What should I look for and how fat of a wallet should I expect?

Is smell inside or outside of car ? If inside, a failed heater core is a common problem

If outside, a failing radiator/heater hose.

+1

If it's really antifreeze, it has to be leaking somewhere. Did he check the coolant level? Loose radiator cap? Water pump? Auxilliary electric pump if there is one? Even if it's outside, the smell can get into the cabin, but heater core is certainly one suspect.

check ALL the hose clamps and other coolant connections, Not sure what Nissan uses but Mitsu and others also use "O"rings some places. Look for powdery deposits at joints indicating coolant is evaporating from the joint.

Being a Nissan ANYTHING is possible - from a $5 hose clamt to a $5000.00 engine overhaul

Clare, which do you think is worse: Mitsu or Nissan?

It's a toss-up. I think Nissan still has a bit more quality and engineering behind them, but they are now both aligned with Renault. Worldwide the Mitsubishi service network has historically been severely lacking - Mazda was too but seem to have improved somewhat. Personally I wouldn't touch either one of the three - I've owned Mitsu in the past. Dodge colt, Mitsu 2600 engine in LeBaron, Mitsu 3.0 in New Yorker. Of the 3 only the 3.0 was worth a pinch of crap - and then only the bottom end.Was on it's 3rd set of heads when I got rid of it (admittedly at 240000km) The Colt 1600 was apart 3 times in under 150,000km (between myself and my brother) -There have been 5 colts in the family and the one my daughter had was the only one that didn't have major problems. Anyone having any experience with the 2.6 knows it's issues. After rebuilding mine, with a list of modifications as long as my arm, it managed to stay together . Timing chains, balance shaft lubrication problems, head problems - - no thanks.

Part of the issue MAY be the dealership network but buying used vehicles I never had to deal with them - - -

I worked for a Mazda dealer years back and their national support was PITIFUL. I worked for Toyota dealesa for a total of 11 years. MUCH better support. When I was in Africa getting any parts for a Mitsu was virtually impossible - and you always seemed to be needing something. Datsun had a reasonable parts supply in Zambia (comparably - NOTHING was easy to get there back then!) and they were decent quality back then (days of the 510 and B210) but as they got more complicated their design got just plain insane - as long as nothing goes wrong they are fine - but a royal pain to work on - resulting in vehicles ending up scrapped long before their time because they are too expensive to repair when they go wrong. I put it down, in large part, to Renault DNA transfer - - - With Mitsu, mabee the DNA transfer will improve them - - -

I might be convinced to take an MX5 Mazda just for the fun factor - as a "second car" My 3 liter aerostars made that mileage without even having the rocker covers off and my 4 liter Ranger is at 373000km without having the covers off.

Going in for all hose replacement Monday am. Good advice.
