Connecting the NEST to a Carrier 38YRA Heat Pump

Jan 03, 2015 1 Replies

This should be a simple problem for anyone with any knowledge of both produ cts.

I probably could have figured it out, but my son, bless his heart, who gave me the Nest for Christmas, installed it when I wasn't home. He wired it wr ong. The heat blows when the A/C is on. Luckily he didn't label the wires, write down where the wires went in the original Carrier thermostat, or take any pictures of the original connections, so I'm starting with a clean sla te.

I have 8 different color wires running to the thermostat:

Blue Orange Green Brown Yellow White Black Red

My son wired it this way:

Blue - C Orange - W2/Aux Green - G Brown - Y2 Yellow - Y1 White - W1 Black - O/B Red - Rc

I haven't a clue where to start.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, because even though it's January 3 rd, it's 85 degrees and very humid here in Sanford, FL.

Thanks-Hank D.

Hi, You can't depend on colors. You have to look at heat pump controller and make sure what color is on what terminal, then it'll be easy. Early model Nest was known to burn out a/c compressor due to under spec'd component. I hope they solve the problem by now.
