I just finished wiring up my first lightbulb in my construction class today and it felt pretty good to acutally see it glow after all that work. I've already powered trough the carpentry and plumbing sections, but electrical is definatly hitting different. My original plan was to just work as a general laborer because I honestly don't have the patience for a four-year apprenticeship before the pay actually gets good. I've been looking into getting a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology instead of going the traditional route. I know my limits and I'm pretty sure I don't have the math skills for a full-blown engineering degree, but the tech side seems more hands-on anyway. It feels like a middle ground where I can still use my hands without being stuck in a classroom for years doing advanced calculus. Does anyone have experience with the EET path versus just staying in the trades? I'm worried that if I just stick to laboring while I'm in school, I might be wasting time that could be spent specializing. I just want to make sure I'm not setting myself up for a dead end just because I'm avoiding the harder math classes.

The gap between a general laborer and an EET grad is massive, but don't let the 'four-year' apprenticeship timeline scare you off. Most IBEW or non-union programs have you working and earning a paycheck from day one. I did the EET thing while working in a panel shop and it beat the hell out of general labor. You spend all day wiring control cabinets and reading schematics, wich is exactly what they teach in the labs anyway. I was getting paid to practice my schoolwork. If you want to use your hands without trashing your body, find a small industrial controls outfit. You’ll learn how to acutally build systems, not just pull wire trough holes. Speaking of the hands-on stuff, does anyone know if learning to weld helps at all with the electrical side? I saw some guys on a site last week working on these massive steel conduits and it looked like they were fusing brackets togather. I'm wondering if I shold try to squeeze a welding elective into my schedule or if that's just a totally diferent world.
