Is anyone else seeing crews burn hours on manual layout just to save on tech?

Was out on a site yesterday and watched this guy spend three hours on his hands and knees with a roll of black electrical tape. He was basicly drawing out every single fixture and wall segment on the protective floor paper by hand. I mean, it looked neat enought, but we have a layout laser sitting right in the trailer that whould have knocked that out in twenty minutes flat. It’s that classic situation where the super wants to save a few bucks on the equipment rental or doesn't want to complicate things with the tech, but then pays a journeyman full rate to crawl around on a dusty floor all morning. It just kills me how often we see people stepping over a dollar to save a dime in this business. We’re talkin' about a massive renovation with scissor lifts and pallets of material everywhere, yet we’re still doing the tape measure and electrical tape dance like it's 1985. I get that the old ways work, but at what point does the labor cost just make it stupid? Has anyone else dealt with a boss or a GC who refuses to use the right tools even when they're literally right there? It feels like we're just burning money on man-hours for no reason.


I’ve seen Supers pull this move when they’re trying to burn a gap in the schedule because the next trade isn't ready to mobilize yet. If they finish the layout in twenty minutes with the laser, they’ve got a journeyman sitting in the trailer staring at his boots for the rest of the shift. It's often a way to justify the headcount to the office while waiting for a delivery or a sub to show up. Still, it’s a massive waste of high-rate labor that coud be spent on actual prep. But honestly, half the time it’s just a lack of trust in the equipment. I worked a job where the Super insisted on **chalk lines** and hand-measuring every single partition on a 40,000 square foot floor plate because he didn't trust the calibration on the total station we had on site. We ended up with three diferent sets of lines by the time the framers arrived because the first two sets got scuffed or wet. We spent more on snapping lines and re-taping than the rental for a robotic layout tool would have cost for the entire month. The real kicker is when they do this on top of **Ram Board** or floor protection. If that paper shifts even half an inch because a scissor lift rolls over it or someone drags a pallet, your entire layout is garbage. You're basically paying a guy to draw a map on a moving target. If you’re going to do a layout that acutally matters, it needs to be on the slab with a shot of clear coat over it to lock it down. It’s that old-school mentality where they see the sticker price of the tool but they don’t see the drain of the guy's knees or the three days of lost time when the plumbing rough-in doesn't match the wall layout. You’re better off using the tech to get it right once and moving everyone onto the next task. If a GC can't see the ROI on a laser that saves four hours of labor a day, they’re prolly failing at the budget elsewhere too.

I'm pretty new to this, but is it actualy hard to learn those laser tools? I keep seeing the older guys talk about how tech 'lies' to you if you aren't careful. If I'm just starting out, should I be pushing to learn the manual way first just to understand the math, or is that just more wasted time? It seems like if the tool is right there in the trailer, it’s a no-brainer, but maybe they think the 'manual' way is a better teacher for greenhorns like me?

To the greenhorn asking about manual layout: definatly learn your 3-4-5 triangles so you can spot-check the machine, but don't rely on a tape for a whole floor plate. The real killer is cumulative error. A tiny slip every few feet and suddenly your last wall is two inches out of square.

The old-school guys usally stick to manual becuase they're terrified of the learning curve or they've seen one poorly calibrated tool ruin a day. If you want to be the most valuable person on site, learn to set up and calibrate that laser yourself. Once you prove it’s faster and more accurate, even the crustiest Super has a hard time arguing with the results.

Keep an eye on whether it's a T&M contract. If the GC is billing the client hourly for that journeyman, they have zero incentive to speed things up with a laser. It’s dirty, but I’ve seen shops drag their feet on purpose just to pad the invoice.

Also, half the time that 'trailer laser' hasn't been calibrated since the Bush administration. If the super knows it’s off but doesn’t want to spend the cash to get it serviced, he’ll make you do it the hard way just to avoid the liability of a crooked layout. It's usally about shifting the blame if things go sideways.

Don't forget about the elasticity of that electrical tape. If the guy is pulling it tight to get those 'crisp' lines, that vinyl is going to shrink back as soon as he cuts it. On a long run, you can lose a quarter-inch just from the tape snapping back.

Combine that with the paper expansion from humidity changes on a drafty site, and your 'neat' layout is basially a suggestion. If you're going to be that pedantic about the visual, you might as well use a chalk box with blue stay-flat chalk. At least that doesn't have a 'memory' like plastic tape does.
