I finally hired a pro to come out and deal with the rats nest of wiring behind my kitchen island. It was a disaster of tangled Romex and old tape, so I expected him to trim everythign back and make it look tight. Instead, he spent the afternoon rearranging things but left these long coils of wire tucked into the back of the junction boxes. He told me it’s better this way in case I ever want to move the outlet or if a wire gets damaged, but it looks crowded to me. I'm worried that stuffing all that extra wire back into the wall is going to cause issues with heat or just make it impossible for the next guy to work on it. Is there a specific rule about how much wire shold acutally be visible? I don’t want to sound like a jerk by questioning his work if this is how it’s supposed to be, but it just looks unfinished compared to the clean installs I see elsewhere.

The NEC actually has a specific requirement for this, often referred to as the six-inch rule. Section 300.14 states you need at least six inches of free conductor measured from the point where it enters the box, and at least three inches of wire must extend past the face of the box. Your electrician is following a 'service loop' philosophy which is standard practice for pros who have had to repair scorched outlets or snapped wires in the past. If you cut the wire too short right at the start, there is zero room for error later.
Stuffing extra wire back in can feel like you're creating a mess, but as long as the box volume isn't exceeded, it's actually safer. Every time you replace a device, you might need to strip back a little more insulation. If you only have three inches of wire to work with, you'll eventually be stuck with a stub that can't reach the terminals, forcing you to use wire nuts and pigtails just to reach the outlet. That creates more heat and takes up more space than a single continuous coil ever woud.
Heat buildup generaly isn't an issue in residential junction boxes at standard loads. The wire is rated for a certain temperature, and a few extra loops aren't going to cause a meltdown unless the circuit is severely overloaded or the connections are loose. The real danger is 'box fill' capacity. If the box is literally bulging or you have to use a hammer to get the outlet to sit flush, then it's a violation. But if it's just a neat coil tucked in the back, he's actually doing you a favor.
And honestly, the 'clean installs' you see in staged photos usually feature the bare minimum wire length because it looks better for the camera. In the real world, a bit of extra slack is the difference between a five-minute outlet swap and a three-hour nightmare involving drywall repair because you had to pull a new home run. If the outlets sit flat and the wires aren't pinched against the metal edges of the box, you're in good shape.
I've spent forty years chasing shorts and I'd rather see a loop than a "short-wire Larry" job any day. Back when we were pulling BX or that old cloth stuff, you prayed the last guy left you some slack. Once that old insulation starts crumbling, you gotta trim it back to find good copper. If there’s no extra, you're tearing out plaster and lath just to move a receptacle two inches. Your guy is doing you a favor for the long haul. I've been the poor soul trying to wire-nut a half-inch stub in a cramped gem box—it’s a nightmare you don't want.
Exactly right. Those service loops are a lifesaver, especially if you ever decide to switch to thicker smart dimmers or USB outlets later on. Those devices take up way more physical space in the box than a standard receptacle, and having that extra slack lets you pull the device way out to get your screwdriver at the right angle without straining the connections. One thing people forget is that if a wire ever breaks off right at the screw terminal—wich happens more than you'd think with older copper—you'll be glad you have those extra inches to strip it back and start fresh.
I used to be a 'neat freak' and trimmed everything tight until I had a kitchen outlet burn out. I had zero slack left and had to spend a whole Saturday fishing a new line through a finished wall just because I didn't have two inches of copper to work with. Now, I fold my wires into an 'S' shape or a loose coil at the back. It makes swapping a bad outlet a five-minute job instead of a construction project. As long as you can push the outlet in without forcing it, you’ll be glad that extra wire is there in five years.
Listen to the guys talking about 'service loops'—they're spot on. I’ve seen too many rookies use a pair of Klein 11055s to snip everythign down to the bare NEC minimum, only to realize they can't fit a bulky GFCI or a Lutron Maestro dimmer later. If you’re worried about space, check the cubic-inch rating stamped on the back of your box. As long as you aren't exceeding the box fill per 314.16(B), those coils are money in the bank. I personally like to leave enought slack to pull the receptacle at least 4 inches out from the wall. It makes troubleshooting with a Fluke 117 much easier when you aren't fighting for every millimeter of an inch of copper.
