It feels good to have enought space for everthing, expecially since we're thinking about adding a dedicated circuit for the garage workshop eventually. The old one was practically bursting at the seams. The electrician seemed super thorough, and everything looks neat and tidy, but I'm just curious if there are any common 'new panel' issues or things that tend to pop up after an upgrade like this? Like, shold I be monitoring anything specific for the first few weeks or months? Maybe buzzing sounds, flickering lights, or anything that screams 'call the electrician back'? Just trying to be proactive here since I'm not super knowledgeable about electrical stuff beyond the basics. It's totally normal to be a bit curious and proactive after a big electrical job like that, especally when you're not super familiar with the ins and outs. The fact that the electrician seemed thorough and everything looks neat is a really good sign, so you're starting from a strong position there.
Usually, with a professional installation, major problems are rare. However, what you might occasionally see in the first few days or weeks are minor things settling in. The most common thing to keep an ear out for is any persistent buzzing coming *from inside* the panel itself. A very faint, low hum can sometimes be normal, especially if you have dimmers or certain types of loads, but anything distinct, loud, or new that sounds like a constant buzz could indicate a loose connection. Loose connections are often the culprit behind flickering lights on specific circuits, too, as the wire might not be making full contact. It's definitely something to call your electrician back for if it persists or gets worse.
Another thing to be aware of, especially if your new panel includes modern Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) breakers (which most new installations require these days), is that they are much more sensitive than older breakers. You might experience what we call 'nuisance trips' where a breaker trips seemingly for no reason. Sometimes, an older appliance with a slightly worn motor or an older wiring run that has a tiny fault could cause these sensitive breakers to trip, even if it never bothered your old panel. It's annoying, but it's them doing thier job to prevent a potential fire or shock hazard. If a specific breaker keeps tripping, note which one it is and when it happens, as that info is super helpful for your electrician to troubleshoot. Beyond that, just genrally keep an eye out for anything that feels off. Are any breakers getting noticeably warm to the touch (beyond slightly ambient warmth)? Do you smell anything odd, like burning plastic or ozone (though this is extremely rare with a new, properly installed panel)? Any smoke, even a wisp, or persistent power loss to a whole section of your home that isn't just a tripped breaker you can reset, would be a definite 'call the electrician immediately' situation. But honestly, most of the time, after a good install, you'll just enjoy the newfound space and reliability.
