Been looking at the plans for this 20 foot abutment wall we're starting next week and the rustication details are a bit more complex than usual. We're using Whitecap forms for the whole thing but I'm worried about the lateral pressure once we get past that ten foot mark. It’s alot of weight to hold steady and I realy don’t want any blowouts on my watch. We've got the guys geared up with dual-leg lanyards since we'll be hanging off the formwork to get the ties set right. It's pretty high up and the wind has been kicking lately wich doesn't help with the nerves. I'm mostly stressed about getting a clean finish around those decorative strips without getting air pockets or shadows in the concrete. What kind of pour rate are you guys hitting for a 20 footer to keep things safe? My boss is pushing for a full height pour but I’m thinking we might need to slow it down to let the bottom set up a bit first. Any tricks for keeping those forms perfectly vertical when you're that high up whould be awesome to hear.

For a 20-foot pour, pushing the full height in one go is asking for a blowout, especially with Whitecap forms if the hardware isn't brand new. You shoud be looking at a rate of about 4 to 5 feet per hour. This allows the bottom lift to take some initial set and relieves that liquid head pressure at the base. If you go faster, you’re betting your life on the ties and those 15k clamps holding up under massive lateral force.
Getting those rustication strips right takes some finesse with the vibrator. If you hit the strips directly with the head, you’ll jar them loose or create shadows in the finish. You want to vibrate about 6 inches away from the strips and let the consolidation happen naturally. To avoid air pockets, use a smaller diameter vibrator head for the face work and take your time. If the mix is too stiff, you'll get honeycombing around the decorative details every single time. Keeping a 20-footer vertical means you need heavy-duty **pipe braces** and turnbuckles anchored into a solid deadman or the footing. Don't rely on the form ties alone to keep it plumb. Check your verticality after the first two lifts are in. Concrete is heavy enought that it’ll shift the forms as it loads up, so you need to be ready to tweak the turnbuckles while the mud is still wet.
Regarding the lanyards, don't trust those form clamps to catch a fall. They aren't engineered for that kind of shock load and OSHA will eat you alive if something happens. Get some **rated eye bolts** in the tie holes for your tie-off points. It’s a cheap insurance policy compared to trusting a gang-lift chain. If the wind is blowing like you said, you realy don't want to be guessing if your anchor point is going to hold if you slip off the waler.
I'm still learning the ropes, but that deadman anchor part has me curious. How deep do those actualy need to be for a 20-footer? I've seen guys just use stakes, but that seems risky for this much weight. Also, does adding a superplasticizer change your pour rate? My foreman mentioned using it to help the mix get around the rustication strips easier, but I’m worried it’ll keep the concrete liquid too long and put even more stress on those bottom clamps.
Watch out with that superplasticizer. It definitely keeps the mix 'alive' longer, meaning that 20-foot head pressure isn't dropping as fast as you'd think. If you're hitting a high slump with the super, you better dial back that pour rate or you'll see those walers start to groan. I've seen guys blow out bottom ties becuase they thougt the mud was setting when it was relly still acting like a total liquid. For the rustication strips, try a thin bead of clear silicone behind them. It stops the 'bleeding' that causes those nasty sand streaks you get when the paste leaks out behind the wood.
Make sure you're double-checking the actual condition of those 15k ties before they go in. If you're using rented hardware, half of it's usally beat to hell. I once had a nut strip out on an 18-footer beacuse it was cross-threaded from the last job, and it nearly sent the whole wall out of plumb.
Also, keep a guy on the ground just watching the base of the forms for any bulging or 'weeping' of grout. If you see the bottom start to sweat too much, tell the pump operator to take a smoke break. No shame in slowing down if the forms start talking to you.
Make sure you're using a high-quality reactive form oil on those rustication strips. If you're too heavy-handed with a cheap release agent, it tends to pool in the corners of the strips, leaving you with nasty bugholes or staining right on the face.
Also, check the gaskets on your Whitecap panels. At that height, the grout pressure is intense enugh to squeeze trough even the smallest gaps. I’ve had luck using a thin bead of clear silicone or some adhesive foam tape on the horizontal joints to prevent that 'bleeding' look. It’s a pain to prep, but it saves you hours of grinding and patching once the forms come off.
