upright vacuum with hose

I was just given an old upright vacuum with a hose attachment,

If I use the hose and its utensils while the vacuum is running on the carpet, wont' it wear a hole in the carpet?? How do you all handle that?

I dl'd the owners manual, but then lost it again in a HD failure, but I don't think it dealt with this.

Thanks

My upright lifts the beater bar above the floor when it is locked in the upright position - the position that one would normally use the hose and attachments. Therefore, there is no friction between the rotation brush and the floor. I had one sweeper with a clutch that could be disengaged so you could use it on bare floors and for when you use the attachments.
