Finally got the students away from framing to build a rocking motorcycle

My students usually spend the entire semester hammering out wall sections and learning roof pitches, so switching gears to a furniture-style project was a massive change. We took a bunch of scrap cutoffs we had laying around the shop and turned them into a full-scale rocking motorcycle. Seeing them move from rough structural work to sanding down intricate curves for a cruiser frame really showed me how versatile these kids can be when they're motivated. We used different wood grains for the mechanical look and hit the tank with some bright red to finish it off. It's currently entered in the Virginia Lumber Cup, and I’m honestly just proud of the effort they put in. It’s one thing to build a square shed, but getting the balance right on a rocker so it actually functions is a whole other challenge. I remember doing something similar when I was helping my nephew with a rocking horse project using some old cherry and white oak. Getting those rockers symmetrical is a nightmare if you don't use a template. We ended up using a router with a flush-trim bit once we got the first one perfect on my old Delta bandsaw. It’s a huge step up from framing headers and jacks, because every 1/16th of an inch shows when you start applying a finish.

Balancing the center of gravity is the trickiest part on a bike design. We found that if the seat is too far back, the whole thing wants to tip rather than rock. We used some Titebond III for the main structural joints to make sure it could handle the weight of a kid really going at it. For the finish, we skipped the red paint and went with a clear Osmo Polyx-Oil to let the wood grain pop, but that bright red on the tank sounds like a classic move for a motorcycle build. I'll definitely check out the voting for the Caroline HS crew. It’s hard to get kids to see the artistry in carpentry when they’re usually just thinking about 16-on-center studs. Transitioning from that rough-in mindset to fine furniture takes alot of patience.

I always find that the hardest part of these mixed-material builds is the glue-up. When my shop class tried a similar curved bench last year, we struggled with how different species like yellow pine and oak expand at different rates. Using scraps is smart for the budget, but we had to be incredibly picky about moisture content so the "tank" didn't check or split three weeks after the competition. We ended up relying heavily on Titebond III and an old Bessey K-Body clamp set to keep everything tight while the glue set. Transitioning from framing hammers to fine joinery usually results in a lot of "oops" moments with the wood filler. Most of my guys are used to a 16-ounce Estwing and don't realize how much a stray hammer mark shows up once you apply a finish. I'm curious if your students used biscuits or dowels for the main frame assembly? On a piece that's actualy meant to be sat on and rocked, those mechanical fasteners hidden inside the joints make a huge difference for long-term durability compared to just surface gluing.

You're spot on about that center of gravity. One thing I've noticed with these motorcycle designs specifically is that becasue they're longer than a standard horse, you relly need to incorporate some subtle "stops" at the ends of the rocker arcs. If a kid gets too much momentum on a cruiser frame, those rockers can kick out and flip the whole bike. I ussually glue on a small riser or flatten the curve slightly at the tips to prevent a total wipeout. It’s a tiny detail that often gets overlooked during the template stage but saves alot of bruised knees during testing. Hope the Caroline HS team takes the win!

I’m still at the stage where I’m just trying to get a basic box to stay square, so a motorcycle sounds like magic to me. When you guys use those bright colors like the red tank, how do you keep the paint from bleeding into the rest of the wood grain? I tried painting a stripe on a pine board once and it just soaked in and looked messy.

Also, since you used scraps, how do you make sure all those diferent pieces are strong enugh to actualy hold a kid? I barely trust my glue joints on a small shelf yet.
