Swapped out my new dishwasher for a different one last week

After two months of a wierd chemical smell coming off everything in the tub, I finally gave up and took it back. The store took it without much fuss, which was a relief since I'd alredy run it close to 60 times trying to let it 'wear in'. It never did. Even my coffee mugs had this plasticky odor that no amount of rinsing fixed. The annoying part was trying to troubleshoot it online first. Every thread gave a diferent answer. Too much detergent, not enugh food soil, the drying method, new unit off-gassing. Tried all of it and the smell stayed put. Picked up the replacement last Thursday and honestly the difference was obvious by the third cycle. Dishes just smell like nothing now, which is exactly what you want. I also like that I can set a delayed start right on the door instead of fiddling with an app at midnight. Small thing, but it matters when you load after dinner and don't want it running untill 1am.

Anyway, if you're chasing a smell bug in a brand new machine and it's past the first dozen washes, trust your gut. It's prolly not going anywhere.

I had a similar thing happen with my older unit, a Bosch 600 series, a few years back. I thought it was just a lingering smell from the plastic interior, but after maybe three weeks of running cycles, the odor got so strong it was noticeable even when the door was open. I figured I needed a proper chemical flush instead of just dumping baking soda in the door like most people suggest.

What finally cleared it out was running it empty for three cycles on the hottest setting possible, and filling the detergent reservoir with only a diluted solution of citric acid. I let it soak for an hour before running the rinse and dry cycles. It felt weird doing something so intensive on a brand new machine, but it worked completely. The residual odor was gone and it didn't come back even after a month of use. It seemed like the original factory coating on my unit needed that aggressive deep clean to set properly.

My experiance with a Whirlpool 540 was quite different than the smell issues I read about here. When I got mine installed, I was in an area with extremely high mineral content in the water supply. The warranty suggested a proper flush test, but I figured I’d just treat the issue myself from the start. I began running cycles using a specific rinse aid booster and significantly reducing the amount of powder detergent I put in the dispenser drawer. The odor didn't appear until about two weeks into the use. It was faint, like damp towels, not chemical like the problems described in the thread. I realized the high calcium levels in my hard water were creating a slight residue buildup on the internal spray arms, which was causing the smell. I ended up running two cycles of just hot water and specialized descaling tablets through the unit to flush those minerals out completley.

After that initial routine, the smell vanished immediately. I think the issue wasn't related to the unit's build quality, but just how my local water interacted with the initial cleaning chemicals. It took a little extra effort on my part to get the machine running cleanly.

That line about trusting your gut is the whole thing. I hung onto a new machine for six weeks doing vinegar rinses and checking the drain hose, kept telling myself the next cycle would be the one. Wish I'd returned it at the two week mark instead. Mine turned out fine once swapped, and the replacement smelled like nothing from the first wash, which told me the first unit was just a bad one. Retailers seem way more understanding about odor complaints than people expect, especially if you keep the box.

Curious how the 724 handles drying with plastics. I swapped to a KA a couple years back after fighting a Maytag that left everything dripping, and the trick I landed on was popping the door open a few minutes after the cycle ends. Tupperware still comes out wet but the plates are bone dry. Also good call on the door controls, mine has the same setup and my wife uses the delay every night without touching an app. Did you notice any difference in noise between the two? Mine sits right off the kitchen so that was a big factor for me.
