I spent a good chunk of the morning going over the schematics and internal specs for that new Maytag unit everyone is talking about. I was fully prepared to find another cheap gearcase or some cost-cutting plastic assembly, but the engineering here actually looks solid. Getting rid of the gearcase altogether while still hitting 900 RPM is a huge win for longevity. It’s a direct-drive setup that feels much closer to the old-school commercial builds than the disposable stuff we've been seeing lately. The real standout for me is the dual-action agitator. It isn't one of those wash plate gimmicks that just wiggles the clothes around; it’s a high-vane design meant for actual scrubbing. Between the simplified drive system and the beefed-up suspension, it looks like they finally built something meant to be repaired rather than replaced. I’m honestly relieved to see a manufacturer pivot back to heavy-duty components instead of just adding more touchscreens and Wi-Fi features.

I actualy picked up one of these units about three months ago after my old front-loader’s spider arm corroded and basically totaled the machine. I was skeptical about the 900 RPM claim beacuse high spin speeds ussually mean more vibration issues, especially with a traditional agitator setup. However, the balance on this thing is surprisingly quiet. I’ve run everything from heavy denim work jeans to king-sized quilts, and it doesn't do that annoying "walking" across the laundry room floor when the load gets slightly off-center. The agitator is the real deal, but I did notice that on the heavy-duty cycle, it can be a bit aggressive on thinner cotton shirts. I’ve started using the delicate cycle for my office wear just to be safe. It moves a lot of water, which is a relief after years of those machines that barely dampened the top layer of clothes. It’s nice to see the tub actually fill up enough to submerge the load. If the lack of a gearcase means I don't have to deal with oil leaks or stripped splines in five years, it'll be the best investment I've made in this house since we swapped out the water heater.
I have a diffrent take on the "back to basics" design after using mine for a few weeks. While the mechanical build is definately superior to the plastic-heavy Samsung I ditched, the aggressive agitator action is a bit much for my wife's lululemon gear and my lighter work shirts. Even on the delicate cycle, that high-vane agitator realy pulls at the fabric. I’ve started using mesh bags for almost everythign now, wich is a bit of a chore compared to my old front-loader.
Also, the water level logic is pretty rigid. I’m glad it isn't one of those "eco" machines that barely wets the clothes, but it seems to default to a deep fill even for medium loads. It’s great for getting mud out of my gardening jeans, but for a standard load of towels, I feel like I'm wasting a lot of hot water. It’s a beast of a machine, but it requires a bit of a learning curve to figure out which cycles won't beat your clothes to death.
I'm totally new to this, but what does "no gearcase" actually mean for someone like me who isn't handy? If the motor is connected directly, does that make it harder to fix if something eventually goes wrong? I’m also curious about that 900 RPM spin. My current old washer leaves everything soaking wet, so does that high speed mean much less time in the dryer? I’m trying to justify the price tag since I don’t know much about "commercial builds," but I'm tired of my laundry taking two hours to dry.
