Is there a way to make a saddle AC fit a deep window sill?

I think I might have made a huge mistake with the new saddle-style AC I just bought. I didn't bother measuring my window depth before I started unpacking everything, and now I'm stuck because I already ripped up the box and used some of the adhesive foam pieces. My window sill is actually about 20 inches deep, but the extension bracket on this unit only goes out to 13.75 inches. It's way too short to bridge the gap. I'm really hoping there's some kind of workaround or a modification I can do to bridge that extra six inches. I'm not the most handy person in the world, but I'm willing to try some basic DIY if it means I don't have to eat the cost of this machine since I can't return it anymore. Does anyone know if they make extension kits for these U-shaped units, or is there a safe way to build out the support so the weight is distributed correctly? The manual doesn't mention anything about extra-deep walls and I'm worried about it falling out or just not sitting right on the frame.


Saddle-style units are designed for standard wall thicknesses, so hitting a 20-inch sill is basically a dealbreaker for the out-of-the-box installation. That bracket is structural; it’s meant to transfer the weight of the heavy compressor side to the exterior wall. If you try to just set it in there, the "U" gap won't clear the wall and the unit will sit lopsided, which usually leads to drainage issues or the unit falling backward.

Since you can't return it, your best bet is building a **custom riser** out of pressure-treated lumber. You need to bridge that 6-inch gap so the unit has a flat surface to rest on. You can buy a piece of 2x10 or 2x12 wood, cut it to the width of your window opening, and secure it to the sill to extend the flat surface. This basically creates a new, wider ledge for the bracket to grab onto so the weight isn't just hanging off the window sash.

If you aren't comfortable with cutting wood, look into a **universal heavy-duty AC bracket**. These are separate from the unit itself and bolt into the window frame or exterior. You can install the bracket first, ensuring it’s level and can handle the weight, and then essentially perch the saddle AC on top of it. You’ll still have a massive gap in the window, which you can fill with high-density foam board or plywood painted to match your trim. The drainage is the most important part. Most of these units need a slight backward tilt so the condensation doesn't leak into your house. If you build out a custom platform, use a level to make sure you have about a quarter-inch drop toward the outside. And since your walls are that thick, you’re going to have a lot of extra space in the U-channel that needs to be stuffed with thick weatherstripping to keep the hot air and bugs from leaking in.

I ran into this exact mess with my old farmhouse walls. I ended up ditching the included bracket entirely. I built a small shelf on the exterior using two heavy-duty L-brackets rated for 200lbs each and a scrap piece of 3/4 inch plywood. I covered the wood in a rubber pond liner so it wouldn't rot. It’s been rock solid for three summers now. Just make sure you screw those L-brackets into the house studs, not just the siding. If you go this route, check your tilt twice before you let go of the unit. It’s way more stable for me than trying to shim the window sill itself.

Have you ruled out just talking to the store manager where you bought it? Sometimes they’ll take a return on a 'defective' fit even with a mangled box if you’re persistent. I’d also be cautious with those custom shelf suggestions. Have you checked if your exterior wall can actualy handle the tension of a DIY bracket? If you’re drilling into old brick or thin siding, you might just end up ripping a hole in your house. These saddle units put a wierd amount of leverage on the frame when they aren't seated exactly as intended.

One crucial oversight in the previous suggestions involves the precise positioning of the condensate slinger ring relative to the exterior chassis, as extending the interior sill depth with lumber may inadvertently obstruct the drainage pathway if the pitch is not calculated to account for the increased horizontal distance. Furthermore, you must verify the specific compressor vibration frequency of your unit, because a DIY wooden extension can occasionally act as a resonator, magnifying the decibel level inside your living space to an intolerable degree if you do not incorporate high-density neoprene isolation pads between the bracket and your new support surface to dampen that mechanical energy.
