I'm setting up a heavy-duty isolation booth in my garage for my drum kit, but since I'm down in South Florida, the heat is basially a death sentence without some kind of cooling. The booth has its own built-in fan system with a few diferent speeds, but that's just moving hot garage air around. I need a real AC solution that won't ruin my recordings with a ton of background hum. I've been looking at those portable AC units, but putting one inside the booth seems like a bad idea becasue of the noise floor. I'm thinking about maybe setting the AC up outside the booth and trying to pipe the cold air directly into the ventilation intake. I saw some camping units that have hoses, but I'm not sure if they have enugh kick to keep a drum room cool while I'm playing. The other option is just biting the bullet and cooling my entire three-car garage, though that feels like a huge waste of money. Plus, if I go the portable route, I'm worried about cutting a vent hole in the garage wall. Does anyone know if that messes with hurricane safety codes or building permits in FL? I'd love to hear how other people have handled the heat without turning thier studio into a wind tunnel.

The noise floor on any portable AC inside that booth is going to kill your recordings, even with the best drum mics. If you're in South Florida, those camping units or small battery-powered coolers are a waste of money; they simply don't have the BTUs to fight the heat soak of a garage, especially when you're physically working hard on a drum kit. You’ll end up with a lukewarm booth and a massive headache.
The move here is a **ductless mini-split** for the whole garage. It sounds like overkill, but it’s the only way to get a proffesional result. A 12,000 BTU unit will handle a three-car garage easily. When you're recording, you set it to the lowest fan speed. Most modern mini-splits operate at around 19-22 decibels on quiet mode, wich is basically a whisper. Your booth’s isolation will handle the rest. Plus, keeping the garage air conditioned protects your drums from the humidity swings that wreck shells and hardware over time. If you absolutely can't do a mini-split, look for a **dual-hose portable AC** and set it up outside the booth. You’d need to build a plenum or a custom shroud to bridge the AC’s cold air output to your booth’s intake fan. Single-hose units are a disaster in Florida because they create negative pressure, sucking hot, humid air through every crack in your garage and booth. You'll be fighting a losing battle against the humidity. Regarding the hole in the wall: South Florida building codes are strict about the envelope of the house. Cutting a 6-inch hole for a vent ussually requires a permit, and it defintely creates a weak point for wind and water during a storm. DIY kits are totally doable if you get the ones with pre-charged lines. It saves you from buying a vacuum pump and manifold gauges. The main hurdle is the electrical—most of these want a dedicated 220v circuit. If you aren't familiar with breakers, that’s where you bring in a pro.
To answer your humidity concern: a regular fan just moves the damp air around. You need a setup that actually removes water. Mini-splits have a dedicated 'dry mode' that acts like a massive dehumidifier. It drains the condensate straight outside thru a tube, so you don't have to keep emptying a bucket in the middle of a jam session.
If you end up piping air from a portable unit into the booth, make sure you build a baffle box for the intake.
