Having just completed laying this flooring in a 3rd bedroom I thought i'd write a quick review. I was originally looking for a cost effective solid wood floor for light traffic areas (bedrooms) which was not laminate (too clicky). Whilst looking around at solid flooring most of it seems to be around the £40 - 50 sqm mark, too much for me. Whilst in my local Wickes I came across their bordeaux pine floor boards. A nice light knotty pine board, tongue and grooved on all four sides and a hefty 22mm thick, which would allow for plenty of refinishing later. More importantly each pack covers almost a square metre and cost only £14.99.
Laying the boards is straight-forward - I laid them over existing boards, having made sure all the services below were up to scratch! The boards fit together well, sometimes a little gentle persuasion was needed with a block & hammer, but nothing serious. I nailed them down and put a little light wood filler over the nail heads. A whole room (approx 4m * 4m) took about 4 hours to complete, but I did have an electric mitre saw which made things easier.
The boards come unfinished, I gave them 3 coats of Ronseal Diamond hard satin clear floor varnish, applied with a sponge roller, sanding lighly between coats.
The result is a beautiful wooden floor, warm on the feet and easy to maintain. They boards are quite robust, although I suspect they might mark if you were to drop something really hard on them, which is why I wouldn't recommend them for heavy use areas.
Hope this helps, I have no affiliation with wickes whatsoever, I just think this is a very good value for money product.
Cheers
Andrew
