travertine tiles - treatment needed?

Hello, all

I am thinking of using travertine tiles in my kids? bathroom. However, I?ve been hearing different stories about whether you need to treat the tiles, how often, how toxic the treatment material may be(!), etc.

I?m having my doubts, so would be grateful for any comments to help me decide.

Many thanks

Chris

One thing that was handy when we did our shower room was the way smaller tiles came ready set on backing in foot squares, which made them easier to lay. But the problem still is the irregular pitted surface, which traps dirt/soap/mould. Don't know if ours were sealed or not as we didn't lay them or buy them, but left it up to the builder. (I just watched to get a few tips now and then.).

If one is diligent with the cleaning, an acidic spray like citric, then a spray down with the shower, followed by a spray with bleach, does keep them fairly clean, but it is certainly more work than it would be with smoother, glazed, tiles.

They are slightly porous and if untreated will allow moisture through. They are also a pain to get a good seal to with silicone for the same reason. I would suggest treatment with one of the lithofin sealers if you are going to use them.
