Grouting & Sealing Travertine tiles

Mar 01, 2004 2 Replies

Hi All,

Does anyone know what the procedure is for grouting and sealing travertine tiles? I know the tiles are quite porous and can stain easily if they are not sealed so I`m nervous about grouting first. I can see though that if I grout first I will be able to seal the grout as well & stop that from being stained. My thoughts were to just grout carefully first using a pointing gun or similar rather than spread the grout all over the tiles and then wipe off.

I would definitely seal first then grout. Then you can use a second coat of sealer to do the grout as well. I have often sealed the tiles before laying to save staining them with adhesive etc.

The spreading all over method is much faster.

you can buy various professional grouting and tiling tools on my web site including a pointing gun

Seal first, two coats or three, then grout, then seal again, two or more coats.
