Am about to tile with 100mm travertine wall tiles. These are tumbled with a pock marked face. As for grouting should I just do the joints, sort of like pointing or wipe the grout over the lot and rub back, ie., filling all the dents and holes with grout?

Travertine should be sealed before tiling. Otherwise you will drive yourself mad. You must also work in a very tidy manner.
Ditch the idea while you still can. If you can't, then be very "tidy"
Do yourself a favour and dump it somewhere.
