Query;wood preservatives?

Hi all, i have some wooden window frames which i need to rub down and repaint. There are some areas where the wood has weathered and/or paint has flaked off and wood weathered. In these areas the wood is a little bleached and maybe a bit brittle though not soft/rotten. Is there anything i can use as a base coat before using undercoat and/or white gloss which will help preserve/strengthen the wood?

Best stuff I have found is Cuprinol 'Ultra Tough' Wood hardener which you should be able to get in most sheds. It reacts with the cellulose in the wood and sets absolutely 'rock hard' and is then impermeable to moisture. If there is any sign of rot though treat it with some clear wood preserver first to kill anything that might remain under the hardener.
