Garage roof suggestions invited

I have a double garage, the roof of which is made of, I think, cement/asbestos corrugated sheets. It has developed several leaks, which I have tried to patch without much success. I think the time has come for something more radical, so I'm looking for ideas, preferably not involving complete removal, although this may prove to be necessary.

Regards and thanks in advance

My old man has just replaced his with that twin-walled honeycombed transparent sheeting. Pricey, and probably not totally suited to a garage, but bloody well lit in there now.

If you have any plans to move in the future it might be worth considering replacement.

When I bought my current house a couple of years ago, the surveyor made a big fuss over the asbestos cement garage roof quoting the need for specialist contractors etc.. (At the same time he missed two major defects in the house itself, but that's another story)

Mine's a small garage and I have no problem replacing the roof myself so the report didn't bother me, but it would have scared off other potential buyers. I'm going to replace this summer with Bitumen corrugated sheets (about 8 quid each from Wickes)

Live with the leaks.

Replace the sheets with new ones.

Put a pitched roof on using corrugated iron sheets.

Put a pitched slated roof on.

In order of cost/desirability.

I am only seeing 2 options here, patch it or replace it. I cant think what else you have in mind.

I would ask what you used to patch it, as it should be possible to repair it using cement mortar dollops. Its imjportant to clean it thoroughly, and I'd acid etch it first, and use fibre in the dollop mixture, and of course use 3:1 mix.

Hi, not sure if its a bit late to be adding suggestions, but if you are concerned about the best course of action with asbestos containing cement / sheets, Asbestos Watchdog are very helpful (htttp://

They will advise you on the best course of action, and help prevent you getting ripped off if complete removal is the most effective option. Hope this helps.
