Cordless Makita smoking

I used my Makita cordless drill for the first time in a while recently and it started smoking from the vents in the housing. I have noticed it do this briefly when I have just started to use it on one or two occasions before but it has settled down and I assumed that it was some dust being burnt off or something. This time was different in that I had already drilled a couple of holes and done a bit of driving with it. I wasn't doing anything particularly onerous at the time but I stopped as soon as I saw the smoke. I then tried to run it without any load - in free air - and it continued to smoke, showing no sign of stopping, so I stopped and put it away. I assume there is some problem now with the motor. What is the most likely problem and is it repairable? Is it something I could do myself and if not would it be worth getting it repaired? It is about 7 years old and has had a fair but not excessive amount of use and is generally in decent nick (other than this problem of course).

Thanks

Bob

I would open it up and see if any melting is visable and check the brushes, are the brushes removable from the outside, some models are, brushes are replaceable but I dont know if they could smoke and they should last. Or take it in for a repair estimate.

Make sure to take the battery out before storing it, otherwise there's a small chance of it catching fire

I had a Makita DHP456 brought to the guy said it was smoking after drilling 6 holes, i changed the motor and brushes and tested the electrics and sent it back working perfectly, he returned it a few days later saying it was s till smoking. so i looked at it again doing 100% test no problem wasnt smoking driull 14 holes not even warm. now we get to the muppet part when cutting holes in a ceiling make sure you use a sharp cutter also do not hold the drill body at the rear of the moto r because it cuts the air flow off also the heat sink is on the right side so yr hand and fingers cover the vents, simply use the machine correctly ho ld the handle pull trigger and let the cutter make the hole do not force it with other hand over vents and it wont smoke

had a Makita DHP456 brought to me, the guy said it was smoking changed motor and brushes and sent it back 3 days later he returned it and said it was still smoking. looked at it again 100% tested not smoking at all i finally worked it out. the guy was cutting holes in the seiling for sunken lights, he was holding drill by handle and also putting hand over the base pushing upwards (WRONG). do not not put your left hand on the bottom and push up, simply hold by handle and push up slowly let the cutter do the work if it doesn't it maybe blunt (buy a new cutter). holding in right hand then using left hand to push up you block the air vents causing overheating of the motor and hence it smokes,

hope this helps
