OT: Granite Slabs/pieces

I know this is woodwooking but this is similar and with the creative minds in here, I assumed many would have ideas.

I have an abundant amount of 1" thick granite slabs of various sizes from smaller counter top sizes to coaster size pieces. I plan to make some coasters and perhaps cutting boards, but seeking other ideas on projects for them.

Thanks

If you find someone to do the lettering, you can make some fine pet gravestones. I have two.

Bases for desk lamps (and I've got a stereo microscope that could use a good base, too). For that matter, a rotating holder for all the remote controls would enhance my TV viewing. Cable remote, VHS, Beta, DVD, BlueRay, stereo, table radio, HDMI switch, AppleTV, Roku... imagine an eightplex of upright holders on a bearing. Oh, and a TV remote, too.

You guys are great. I didn't think of any of the ideas you three presented thus far. Thanks

Assuming that they are finished smooth. Pull an appropriately sized one for a sharpening station.a little spray adhesive and fine grit wet or dry paper and you're on your way to scary sharp.

Baking stone. Chilled it is good for rolling out a pie crust. Cheese board.

I'd never use one for a cutting board as it would dull a knife.

or, imagine just one remote. ;-)

Good point on the cutting board, though wouldn't the same apply with a cheese board?

I like the baking stone idea.

I have plenty and those are good ideas. I've been wanting to set up some sort of sharpening station to keep the cutlery set sharpened since they can't even cut paper very well at the moment.

Yeah then the cable company goes to a blue tooth remote, and your sound bar and the cable remote have some cross over.

Well least I do not have to get up to flip the tuner.

A cheese board often uses a wire to cut the cheese (in the literal sense) so wouldn't dull. In any case, the knife need not be sharp.

Granite countertops are great for that. My wife loved the island in our previous house.

I've got Logitech Harmony universals, but they are less than intuitive. TiVO setups require a bunch of directions to use (some oddball button) by name, for instance.

How flat are they? Would they make a cheap surface plate?

All flat and smooth. I just need to cut to shape, clean and polish up, depending what I make.

Some years back I found where a counter top company was dumping their breakage and off cuts, and I picked up a few pieces of various sizes. One I use for gluing down sand paper for sanding and sharpening. The others are still leaning up against the outside of my shop. They are "pretty flat," but they have measurable variation. Its not as good as my surface plate, but if I didn't have one the piece I use for sanding would due for non critical work.

Not sure they're as flat as a surface stone (Woodcraft advertises .05mil for a 12"x18" stone) but a couple of slabs with some various carborundum grit could optically flatten them, if you wanted that far. Also not sure granite tops are thick enough to hold the flatness.
