My Son's Got The Woodworking Bug

Every since we worked on Soap Box Derby cars together, my son has always been into fixing stuff. Now he's into making stuff. He's 28, bought a house a couple of years ago and has been buying tools as required.

Here's the project he just finished. He found plans for a Dog Crate End Table and decided to modify the plans to make it into a Dog Crate Kitchen Island. It's his first real start-from-scratch project.

I'm a proud papa!

That's terrific. My son and I have tackled several projects together including building a kitchen buffet out of solid maple. He has even expressed some interest in learning to turn, but an 8 year old daughter keeps his spare time to a minimum.

Nice, but is there some reason that the end grain appears unfinished/unsealed? If ya needs a dog crate, this (and the one he probably saw in a magazine as I did) is a good deal. If it's to be an island in the kitchen, I just think I'd want the top sealed six ways to sundown for ease of cleaning. (nothing against Fido, but. . . ;-) )

Nice of him to do it since he broke the freakin' cribbage board!

I like it. Afraid to show it to my wife, though. By the way, if he would put some food in the dog's food bowl, the dog would come out of his island.

He had just cut the top. He bought it from a guy on Craigslist/Offer-Up/Let-Go. (I can't keep track of where he buys stuff anymore. He shops them all and gets some really good deals. The Rigid table saw he got for $120 basically pisses me off.)

The top (and bottom of the top) is already treated with butcher block oil. He's bought more oil, he just wanted to show the project. The end grain will be done soon.

Well... don't give up. For a while I taught some woodworking classes (wood turning)when I had more time. I was really surprised at how many guys came back to wood working later on in their lives, and they ALL told me they st arted their interest in wood by doing wood working projects with their fath ers.

That seed you planted might just need a little more time.

Cool Project... though also being used for food prep it may inflict emotional pain on the dog being under all those good eats! ;~) My dog wouldn't stand for it...

Well at least the crumbs, that hit the floor, will not be there long. :~)

Saw that and immediately saw it as a torture chamber for the dog.

Guess I have a sick mind. :)

Yes, I know that isn't the purpose, or is it?

Many dogs enjoy being in a crate...better than being left alone in a empty house. Both of my brothers have dogs that will nap in their crates during the day, even though they know that that there is where they will get locked up when the master is away.

There are exceptions. I have one. ;-) He doesn't like his crate, but it's not the crate. He just doesn't like being left alone, period.

Plate of fresh grilled burgers on the top, dog penned below. Can't reach the food scraps that fall to the floor. Torture indeed!

Dogs are easy to train.

I don't think I could crate a dog while I was gone. When we had dogs, they always had free run of the house when we were gone.
