Grain Direction in Arch

Aug 16, 2006 2 Replies

What is the accepted(best?) way of orienting grain in an arch? Should the grain run from the bottom corner to the center i.e

/// \\\ or should it run straight ||| |||

Any rules of thumb ?

Strength isn't an issue, it's actually just a decorative piece that will be the bow on a bed shaped like a boat, the arch will be made from walnut with a floating panel of teak and holly inserted into it.

Thanks in advance.

If it isn't going to be under stress, it becomes an esthetic question: what looks best? It is common to alternate arch directions on a piece that is glued up. But if it isn't wide, you can do it however you want. Isn't that great?
