Bed Build Video

The Samurai dude builds his son a live edge slab bed in this touching video:

Several comments questioned his placing the mattress on a panel (instead of slats) which restricts air flow under the mattress that could result in mold growth.

I question his judgment using walnut (splitting) wedges @ 4:35 tensioned against the horizontal grain of the headboard/footboard. I woulda thunk the split repair @ 3:30 with the long screw should have been a clue. What was he thinking?

I guess the mold issue would depend on where you live. I've built 2 sets of bunk beds and 2 platform beds, all of which have the mattresses on a panel, typically 3/4? plywood. I'd estimate a total of 90 years of mattresses on panels and never a hint o f mold. The beds live in the rust belt, not the desert, so maybe in a rain forest mold would be an issue.

Or possibly the commenters were insinuating the child might have bladder control issues?

That's a sweet looking table. But the feet look a tad to narrow for the top if someone were to butt rest on the edge.

Depends on the size of the a$$, the wedged through tenons would remain unscathed, regardless.

I've no doubt of that.

The ones under the table look fine, the ones on the bed look like knee knockers.
