The problem maybe how porous the travertine is ... or it's fake VHB tape, difficult to be sure of getting genuine 3M stuff.

The best DS tape for this sort of application is the type with a foam core as it compensates for any unevenness. I got mine from a local building plastics supplier.

Towards the back, it covers installation, one potential step is applying a primer. Full VHB bond strength reached after a period of time (like curing).

See the video "Can tape hold a scooter" at about 70% down this page. Some of the applications of tape in that example, are "non-challenging". Only when the tape has to hold a sustained load, is the tape being tested. Because the tape is elastic, it can handle some thermal coefficient of expansion.

But so far, I cannot find a claim of PSI (pounds per square inch) rating of the tape. Gorilla tape is rated 0.5 PSI. You really need a continuous surface without a lot of gaps if you expect a tape to have a high bonding strength. Like, pressing two bars of stainless steel together with tape in between, might highlight the strength. Whereas taping to a sandstone wall might not work. At some point, JB Weld or other liquid materials, *might* do a better job on an irregular surface, but you would have to work them in.

You would not expect anything to "bond to dirt", because the dirt itself has no strength and the dirt fails before the tape would.
