Why are local councils so short sighted?

It's weird how they (councils) can;t even co-ordinate the colour of bins

Generally speaking :- We have black bins for landfill, green bins for cardboard, glass, plastic and brow bins for compostable stuff, and garden stuff, which is plants and stuff that grows.

If I have any metal to getv rid of I but it in a bag lable it metal and leave it on the top of bin closest to the road it's usually gone in a day or two collected by someone with a shopping trolly.

Not sure what to do about off cuts of wood, but when in doubt I just but it in the black landfill bin.

I guess we're lucky that Live nuetral and earth colours don't vary between councils.

can't remmeber the size but we have big bins and little bins :-)

I think my council spend a few million quid on a system and they still can;t tell the differnce between black plastic and milk bottle plastic.

Because it costs a lot or it is impossible to do.

otherwise we would just need one big bin for plastic, glass, food, leaves and last but not least students !

I think it is hackney that employs people with eyes that can tell black plastic from other colours, they can even tell plastic from glass, from cardboard. A friend of mine worlked for them for a week or too.

Are the green ones recycalble, how about the white ones or the clear ones ? How do we kn ow this is not just a raceist policy :)

Why can't there be some form of colour code, or are you suggesting we should be able to chose our own colour scheme for anything from mains woring to traffioc lights ? Only a no brainer would think that is a good idea .

So why is it that black plastic isn't recaclable is it a Harry sort of thing black is bad other colours good ?

Then why call it green waste ? Why allocate a colour to waste ?

What if everyone is thinking outside the box and decide to make traffic lights all RGB and the colour shown should match or compliment the colours of the season ?

Why do they make it difficult to tell, here;s their website, no statment about PG tips not having plastic except perhaps the pyramid ones.

So I assume all the other PG bags still use plastic.

So why do it. I'd use a large mug to make the tea then pour it into two cups.

I have used one of those metal balls that yuo put loose leaf tea in. But small leaves and bit still get through the holes or the clog up in a few weeks.

err, HALF of the money your council spends comes from Central Government. Always has. Use to be called the 'Rate Support Grant' in the old days. If you paid the proper cost of your council services your council tax would be double.

Blame the 'free' NHS for keeping so many people alive 10 to 15 years longer than their biological 'use by' date, so that they then end up demanding 'free' social care, but heaven forbid, don't even suggest that the house that they paid less than a £1000 for in the 1950's and now worth £200,000+ should be used to pay for their own social care. Oh no, apparently that is 'unfair', their relatives would lose their 'inheritance'.

The problem is actually proving it to the standard that todays legal system insists on.

Would need a lot more bums on seats in the council, with an RPI-linked final salary pension and a leased BMW, totally isolated from the real economy. How much more council tax are you willing to pay ?.

Mine was £330 in 1993 after council tax replaced the poll tax, now it is over £1,600 a year, and most of the increase occurred under NuLab.

In some rural areas green bins were the original general waste bin to blend in with the countryside so they had to choose another colour from black, blue, green or brown for recycling and compostable waste. Here black is landfill, green is compostable and blue recylcable with a separate blue box for glass (traces of broken glass would wreck the value of all the other recyclable materials if it gets mixed in).

The weirdest compostable bins I have ever seen were in Salford City where they are a distasteful shade of shocking pink (corporate colour!).

To be fair, we had 240l black bins for general (landfill) waste and green bins for garden waste. Black used to be the standard colour for plastic bins, even before wheelie-bins and green seems sensible for garden (green) waste - you are not allowed to put soil in.

The council wanted to introduce smaller 120l bins for general waste and additional bins for other recyclables. It made sense to repurpose the black bins as one of the recycling ones and add a smaller, grey bin for the general waste, rather than scrapping and replacing all the existing black bins. It also made sense for the existing green bin to remain as a garden waste bin, but also allow food to go in there.

I'm sure I remember silver for all waste and there was no notic eon them not to put hot ashes in them.

Maybe I should 3D print my own bins in multicolour layers, that would confuse them.

Yes. Well grey really - galvanised. But they disappeared many years ago and were gradually replaced by black plastic ones. I suppose it made sense, as wheelie bins were first introduced, to use the same colour - black.

I do have about 50 such bins, that I use for pens, pencils, 74 series chips , glue tubes, glue sticks, and anything I can think off. I don't think I could 3D print them as cheaply as I can buy them.
