Where to buy plasterboard?

A large room in our house has a damaged ceiling (lath and plaster, without the plaster!). This isn't a big area, and the rest is either stable or has been replaced already. I need to do a repair with probably four sheets of 1200x600. SWMBO won't let me do the lot!

I have no wish to skim the whole lot, so I want tapered edge stuff. I'm in east Kent, and clearly I'm not looking in the right places. The sheds either have a pitiful selection, or they only have square edge board (B&Q warehouse in Canterbury). The builders merchants I've tried don't have it either.

Am I just unlucky, or am I looking in the wrong place, or what?

I've not seen 1200*600 in taper edge either...whereas everybody has it in 2400*1200. I'm assuming buying a larger sheet and cutting it is not an option?

You could try CCF

A little while ago, I needed some fire retardent plasterboard in this size and they had it. They specialise in everything to do with office partitioning, shop fitting, dry lining etc.

It appears that they have a branch in Ashford......

I could....in fact it could go up in one piece, but it's a very high ceiling and awkward. But there, you have helped by confirming size/availability (although I haven't found taper edge in ANY size yet!)

Look for your nearest Wickes - cheaper than the BMs for most things and they have tapered edge p/b. Neil

Thanks - wondered about them, 15 miles away and I had no faith in phoning!

If its the Ashford branch then give them a ring - I have only had good experiences from them and have used them a lot (I've also phoned them with some pretty obscure questions over time :-)).

Mind you, half the staff from Ashford now seem to be working in the new (ex focus) wickes in Folkestone. Hope they haven't diluted the good staff too much.

Wickes still seems to be one of the few places (John Lewis is another that springs to mind) where the staff will say "I don't know" if they don't know. Most places seem to try to fob you off by reading the back of a box over your shoulder - Ashford B&Q seems spectacular at talking rubbish IMHO.

At least in Wickes they tend to go find someone who does know what they are talking about! (Or maybe I have just got lucky!)

They however only stock 2.4x1.2m sheets (both 9.5 & 12.5mm) in tapered edge, or at least in the 3 that I use (and no mention in catalogue either). The only place that I've found with the smaller sheets in tapered edge at

1.8x0.9m (12.5mm I think) are at both the B&Q Warehouses which I use. Not sure if you can get it anywhere smaller, but certainly 1.8x0.9 sheets can relatively easily fixed to ceiling (and also have the advantage for me that they fit into boot of car). Maybe give your local B&Q warehouse a ring to ask which next closest one stocks the above, as certainly some of them do.

I've not checked sizes but B&Q certainly sell tapered edge plasterboard.

The problem with taper edge on ceilings is that the taper is usually on the long edges only. If you need more than 2.4m in both directions, you've got the problem of taping the square edge sides.

Good point...but as it happens, I don't. The ceiling has a bloody great beam across it which splits it into manageable chunks.

Thanks to everyone - sorted now.
