But if he thinks the british public will sign up to sky or another pay tv channel to watch top gear then he must be mad. Not sure it they'd tolerate adverts either.

Why would he care ? He gets paid to do a show whether or not anyone watches it. I bet he's gettiogn paid for teh 2 or 3 shows that apparrently wonlt be aired.

Why not, enough sign up for sky sports and the other packages.

I suppose you mean "lose".

They're already on Dave or something aren't they? How does that work with adverts?

Not terribly probable for somebody posting on Usenet though :-)

Yup - everyone becomes an expert on filming after just one visit.

Not quite sure what the rating will be for a cancelled series? ;-)

I gather that the incident was not on set, but involved everybody getting back to the hotel rather late in the evening, somewhat tired and emotional after Clarkson insisted on several more rounds in the pub, only to find that the hotel's kitchen had closed and the chef had knocked off for the night...

Wonder if we'll ever find out the facts?

If they had long finished for the day, perhaps a bit odd production types were still around to be thumped? Unless he was drinking with them, of course.

Ah - that adds more intrigue then...

Fascinating how the truth is outing in a twisty turny way...

According to Ch4, the helicopter taking them back to the hotel had to wait over 2 hours

I suspect they were all on the same set and in the same hotel, with some of the production team probably having headed straight to the hotel, or just spending less time in the pub. The one who got twatted almost certainly just happened to be the poor sod landed with breaking the bad news to diva, pissed-up on empty stomach, that they'd tried to hold the chef, but he happened to prefer going home after a long day to waiting around.

Oh, and Clarkson had - Man's Man(tm) that he is - been drinking rose wine...

Dave Plowman (News) put finger to keyboard:

Maybe someone 'happened to be filming' as the incident took place.

(Everything else on TG is scripted; why not this barney?)

So, another British management failure then. If you expect high profile customers in your hotel, then you make sure that the chef doesn't want to go home until the customers are serviced. The opportunity for some free publicity for your business has obviously been missed. Seems like the manager went to the same training school as the BBC one that apparently is just looking for a chance to beat Clarkson around the ears without considering the probable financial losses to the BBC.

Indeed.

David Cameron's comments imply that there was cold food available, but not hot.

Probably depends whether the BBC publishes its report or not. Clarkson is reported as denying that he had hit anybody, describing the incident as 'handbags and pushing'.

Wrong politician - Nick Clegg, not David Cameron

If they were "filming near Newcastle" as the earlier reports said, the hotel is a good 100 miles away. This probably explains the helicopter that Channel 4 news mentioned. That story implied the drinking was before the helicopter ride.

"Free publicity"? Do you really think that every hotel that any TV crew ever stay in gets a plug?
