Usually but it is normally quite easy to unblock through the filter opening some where at the bottom the machine on the front. There migth even be a little manual drain hose there too. Once unblocked and the rotor turning readily, set to spin only with nothing in the machine, filter cover off and you should see if the pump is turning.

(I've had cocktail sticks, coins, keys to bracelets jamming WM drain pumps).

Hair grips and shirt collar stiffeners in one in a rented house.

Coins can be particularly bad as they can puncture a hole through the outer drum if they get trapped whilst spinning - apparently not uncommon according to a Hotpoint engineer some time ago, so I do make double sure none get into the washing machine.

Luckily we don't use either of those here.

Oooh, I bet, especially if it got 'stood up' between the drum and the tub at the wrong angle at 1400 RPM. ;-(

We have found a few still in the drum (luckily then considering), along with the remains of old paper currency. Not sure if we have put any plastic notes though the WM yet (as I'm not generally in charge of that department). ;-)

Yes, whether blocked or not. The question does make me wonder whether all it needs is unblocking.
