Weird debit account

Trouble with a Nat West account...

If I try to use the card, or the phone via Googlepay, at a certain cafe, it has always been declined. Likewise, on the local bus it gets declined, but another bank car or Gpay work fine.

Ringing NW, they have a record of the declines on the bus, and claim it was due to the card being pin locked, but they have no record of the cafe's system declining the card - odd because I pop in there and have done for years, and it has always been declined. The owners claim that they don't have any other Nat West cards declined.

Where the card or Gpay works, it completely works reliably.

You should get a receipt saying that the charge was declined. Scan it and send it to NW as evidence.

Incidentally, has anyone got letters from their bank saying that their new debit card was not being used, so next time they will not issue a new one?

This seems daft to me, but it does pay to use it on Amazon from time to time and stop them thinking you are hardly using it. Brian

What does pin locked mean?

I do wonder if the pay by mobile device is seen as a cloned card or something? Brian

Your post has made me take an interest in Google wallet. One credit card I have appears to work although I have not yet made a payment. My other

54 year old credit card does not support google wallet. It has its own app where the contactless payment function does not work on my phone. I have made a complaint. I wonder if it will ever be resolved.

Why Amazon? There are plenty of local traders that would welcome your business.

If your card is a barclaycard, I wouldn't hold my breath, for google wallet support, they seem to like "their own way".

It's a debit card, per subject line.

I withdraw this remark. I see Michael has introduced another card to the debate.

Santander wanted to stop issuing me with a new cash card as I never use it until I told them I *do* want to have it as I can use it to get cash out if the Barclays one fails - perhaps because their system goes down. I've got £500 in an easy access account with Santander for the purpose.

Or just take a tenner out at an ATM.

I cannot remember the last time I used my debit card. I always use my CC and pay off the full amount every month. I get a small percentage cash back on my CC on every purchase.

My bank also pays a small fixed sum of 5p for the first 20 purchases a month using the debit card but the average spend on my CC gives a much higher return.

I spend very little actually using cash these days, the exception being over the Xmas period when staying with friends the two local takeaways only took cash.

I can, to get no international surcharge with international purchases. My credit card doesn't do that. I also use debit cards on my paypal account because there is a surcharge when you use a credit card and I do almost all online purchases except amazon using paypal because its much easier to get a full refund if something goes wrong.

I do that with most local purchases.

I don't but use the credit card because that automatic oay off in full every month is more convenient than moving money into the debit card account manually.

I keep lots of cash in an bank account that oays the best interest rate and don't want that account to be lootable if the card gets lost or stolen or hacked.

One of my debit cards does that but not enough to be bothered with,

None of ours do that anymore. Some fo the sellers at the annual show and similar field days only take cash but most take cards now. I only really buy sox and proper leather belts there tho.

I still use cash at garage/car boot sales even tho I can pay to any mobile number. Its not worth holding up the queue of those paying for what they want to convince the seller its as good as cash.

I use Paypal with a CC for a lot of on-line purchases with no surcharges.

Brian can't, they are all touchscreen now :-(

Yeah, my brainfart there. The surcharge is with transferring money to another paypal account and it applys to any card. Its free with a bank account instead of any card.

In America, I found drive-in ATMs with Braille instructions. "Go figger", as they say.

Maybe I am wrong but I always feel that using a credit card takes money away from the trader, on the basis that CC charges are higher.

Are they?

That varies with the jurisdiction, but generally, yes.
