Weeping compression joints adjacent to water meter

The cupboard under the kitchen sink is damp and it is clear that their are water drops around the brass compression nuts around the stop tap above the water meter and the nut on top of the water meter itself.



I guess we're talking original install 1968.



I've tried best I can to tighten the nuts but not sure if that is best practice.



Any suggestions other than replacing them all which I am hesitant to do myself?

Most likely to be condensation. Dry it thoroughly and wrap pipe insulation or a towel (or anything else that will insulate it) around the pipe and fittings. If you still think a joint may be weeping then tie a strip of loo roll around any suspect joints. Be wary of over-tightening because it can distort the pipe and cause further leaks.

To be clear: the loo paper is an indicator ...

Make sure, it's not just condensation on the cold pipes first. Dry them, then leave overnight, are they still wet next morning, with no water used?

If so, turn the water off, release the compression joints, and cover the olives only, with several wraps of PTFE tape, and tighten back up.

Find a coloured paper hat from a cracker and wrap a strip of this paper around the joint. Follow with a strip of normal bog roll and tape in place. Any leakage will stain the bog roll hat-coloured.

That may actually be a leaking gland.

That may not help with a gland.

I think seriously if yoiu are not up to it, you need a 'house water tuned off at the street, remove incoming main stopcock and replace' job.

Probably half a days labour plus parts. Say £350.

We seem to have two stop taps! One before the meter in a very awkward place and this one after the meter.

I'm really worried about disturbing the one before the meter as I'll struggle to get at it if I need to replace it. I guess I'd better make sure I can turn off the supply from the street.

Hopefully it will prove to be just condensation. The wall behind the pipes is mouldy which is a bit of a sign.
