Water softener and dish washer

Firstly, I've tried Googling but without definitive results.

Since we had the water softener installed I've noticed that the (probably) aluminium rivets in some kitchen knife handles seem to be slowly dissolving. However the knives are about 8 years old so this could be cumulative.

There is also discolouration on some rubber knife handles.

Glass seems to be etching a bit more although we switched to a dish washer powder - Finish Classic powder - that Which? recommends as best for not etching glass.

The water is certainly very soft.

So, before I start extensive tinkering has anyone else seen similar results after changing to a water softener?

There is no salt in the dish washer salt container, so there should be no extra softening attempted by the dishwasher.

The dishwasher is new - part of a Howdens kitchen and their own brand - so the change in dishwasher could also be a factor (although I am not sure how). New dishwasher and the water softener installed at the same time.

Cheers

Haven't seen any problems in 30 years with a couple of dishwashers, a water softener and Lidl cheapo dishwasher tablets. I did manage to destroy the paint coat on a caravan once, with Finish dishwasher powder.

How did you get the caravan into the dishwasher?

I took the powder(dissolved in hot water) to the caravan!

I am disappointed. I had visions of you DIY-loading 12 gauge cartridges with Finish in order to clean up the neighbourhood :)

That'll give Clarkson ideas...
