Revive Your Home with Vintage Wallpaper: Discover Where to Find Rare Patterns Online (2023 Update)

For trying to match some damaged 20 year old wallpaper. To find , hopefully, a colour, pattern and texture match for just 1 roll of remedial work rather than redoing the whole lot. Would it be possible to identify a maker from a scanned in picture submitted to a site somewhere ?

It may be possible to find a match for the wallpaper by uploading a picture of it to a site like Google Images in order to find similar images, but it is unlikely to find an exact match as the original wallpaper may have faded over time and the manufacturer may no longer produce it. Another option would be to look for companies that print custom wallpaper based on a sample or picture, such as Spoonflower

or Homebase

, or to experiment with printing out patches of the wallpaper on suitably textured paper and matching the colors. However, it is important to note that matching the wallpaper may be difficult as the gamma of the display can affect the way the colors appear.

You could try the google picture search

Possibly - google images can match a picture and find other ones similar on the Internet.

It's a long shot though - it's not a pattern recognition algorithm so you need to upload a picture that contains the same sample size as a typical sample picture for wallpaper then hope, if the manufacturer still makes it, that they have a picture on a website.

I don't think you're going to be very after 20 years.

Plus what you have will have faded so you'll not get a match anyway.

You might be better to google and see if anyone can print to order based on a sample (or picture) or your existing. It ought to be possible with modern technology to run off a roll of bespoke paper.

In fact:

They are aiming at art paper, but I see no reason they could not take a pattern sample and cleanly stitch it into the repeating dimensions you want. You'll get your fade built in too.

You will never match it, as because as others have said, unless its always been like Tukentamens tomb and never lit, the original will have faded. Even if you could find the original pattern still on sale which is highly unlikely. Unless its a hand blocked paper in which case it would cost a mint in any case.

If it's isolated patched of damage, which are impossible to conceal with pictures, furniture etc, you could maybe try photographing a section of the wall and printing out A4 size patches on suitably textured paper. You'd probably need to experiment a lot with the white balance on the camera and the printer settings to get a good match. Crop down the test sample to a 5cm square to save wasting ink. You'll also need to be sure that any adhesive you use won't cause the ink to run. After sticking on the patches you could spray then with an appropriate matt or gloss finish to match the existing paper

I'd not thought of custom paper, there are a number of such places, including homebase it seems

All looking more possible than I envisaged. At least the affected small bit of wall is isolated from the rest of the room, so an imperfect match would probably not be noticed. Now to dig out the architect's colour swatches and take a pic with an overlain scale.

You will find the left over half roll in a years time when you least expect to.

My parents always used to buy a couple extra rolls when papering a room and stick them in the attic in case of situations like this.

Yeah I know that the stuff stuck to the wall wil likely have faded compared to the backup rolls but it's still often a better option than alternatives.

prints out 2 kinds of custom wallpaper & 20 kinds of fabric & giftwrap too. You might want to print out your photos until you get one you think is a match & have them print a sample. Measure twice cut once.

Yes indeed, very interesting, How old was the post replied to this time? Incidentally, paint and wallpaper matching on phones or computers is not very good, as the way the gamma of the display is set can make completely different shades look the same when you want to match them with a sample. Oh relatively new then. I have given up looking The silly thing is, I as a blind person just clicking the link to the site can quite plainly see the date of origin of the thread, so why do people keep on replying to it. Is that date perhaps only visible due to me being blind? You may laugh, but so many sites hide text as the ink and paper colour are set the same, but this does not matter to a speech system, it just reads the words. Brian
