I'm due for a new set of batteries, 4x NP17-12 or equivalent. I've bought Yuasa and Tayna own-brand ones, not noticed much difference TBH.
Looking around I see a few of the same form factor, but offering higher capacity, 18 to 20Ah instead of the 17Ah of the originals, are these just likely to be "inflated marketing numbers"?

Yes, they're the OEM brand fitted by APC, I think the local Euro Batteries stocks them.
Just replaced a set in one of mine, used CSB to replace CSB as they seem to last fairly well (last set lasted 5 years, and I don't think the UPS is particularly kind to them)
