TRVs

Hi,

If you push the pin on a TRV does it start or stop the flow? I'm wondering whether the radiator is on or off when you take off the top of a TRV.

I'm about to remove a radiator without draining the system; I'm hoping to isolate the radiator at the TRV and lock shield. I'm wondering what will happen if I take off the top of the TRV. Of course, I might leave the top on and turn it to the frost setting.

TIA

On Mine, if I take the dial off, this opens up the TRV and the rad gets hot. I dont know if its the same for all types.

Turning it onto the frost setting should work, as long as it doesnt get too cold!! You might be safer to leave it until the summer time ;-)

I beleive that you can get special decorating caps for them which should close it off.

If you take off the head that allows the pin to come all the way out so opening the valve so what you neeed is a decorators cap that you screw on after removing the head and that completely closes the valve .Some TRV's are supplied with them .They are just a small cap like a bottle top. You could set it to the "frost" setting but if the room gets cold enough the valve will open. You also need to be sure that the lockshield valve at the other end closes completely and watch you don't spill any of the contents when you remove the rad .

You can buy blanking plugs from plumbers merchants. I always use them if I remove a rad, TRV's & lockshields often drip.
