IIRC there has been some relaxation on the rules, there was a post about it a while ago (maybe from Nightjar).

Maybe a rail tamper has a speed limit that made it difficult to schedule. Also, it would only have to be over the gauge or axle load for a small section of route.
What, 7ft and a half inch?
I was thinking of height.not track width.
There are a few old broad gauge tunnels still in use on the Paddington-Bristol line.
They are _big_.
Andy
They arn?t that big , Box tunnel for instance had to have the trackbed lowered by digging down to accommodate the cables for the recent electrification . What makes it look big is a bit of theatrical architecture at the entrances which are larger than normal but the tunnel becomes smaller inside after a short distance.

This town used to have a small seaside swimming pool the same shape as Box tunnel. One of the main contractors for the tunnel came from here, and he re-used the formwork for the pool roof.
