I replaced it how the previous one was taken out. As it was problematic before, I could have replaced a incorrectly fitted diaphram with another incorrectly fitted diaphram (I used the assumption "it must have been correct".
There is no brass thing on the top.
With regards to the crack - not sure, but I feel i must remove it again. One thing i remember is having to cut the diaphram to size as it was too big.
When removed I can have a look at if there is a crack or not.
Secondly, how should a correctly fitted diaphram look and what should it be held with etc.
I remember buying a pack of 2 diaphrams. it was blue in colour and like a slightly thicker piece of paper but in plastic.
