The Modern Plumber and Sanitary Engineer

Have uploaded parts of Electric Light and Electric Bells from the following work.

Probably about 1907-1920. 'The system of wood capping of electric wiring still has its advocates', you will be pleased to hear.

Modern Plumber And Sanitary Engineer

Treating of Plumbing, Sanitary Work, Ventilation, Heating (Electric and Other), Hot-Water Services, Gas-Fitting, Electric Lighting, Bell- Work, Glazing, etc. By sixteen specialist contributors under the Editorship of G. Lister SUTCLIFFE, a.r.i.b.a., M.R.S.I., Editor of " The Principles and Practice of Modern House Construction", etc. With Appendices of Tables, Memoranda, Mensuration, etc. To be completed in

6 super-royal octavo volumes, bound in cloth.

This is a work for the master plumber, the operative plumber, the plumber-electrician, and, in fact, for all who are in any way practically concerned in plumbing, sanitary engineering, or any of the associated trades; for all who have to do with the building, sanitation, ventilation, lighting, and heating of houses and other edifices.

The illustrations are a special feature. They include diagrams, half- tone pictures, full-page and folding plates, many of the last in colour. There are upwards of 40 plates and 1100 illustrations in the text.

I've been thinking of uploading that for some time, but have run out of tuits.

If it's the same edition I've got the latest date reference I've found is

1908 (in volume 6 accounts) and it has references to the education acts up to 1903, so I would put it as the end of the first decade of the last century, certainy not post war (one).

It is about the time my grandad was a fairly young plumber, and had to do (and was very well up with according to what my mother told me) with electrics and radio in the days much prior to the BBC and close to the Titanic disaster.

Thanks I enjoyed that - have ripped out any amount of slip joint conduit and the like in earlier days. You're right about the pictures, particularly when you think of the work involved in getting each picture print ready, plate making and the like.

I think it's out of copyright, there are print-on-demand reprints from India available.

I might try and put up some tumbler switch circuits soon if you're interested.

George Lister Sutcliffe died in September 1915 according to Wikipedia. His copyright would have been death + 50 years. Even if his work would have been affected by changes to copyright laws in the 80s and 90s (and I don't think it was)I still think it would have fallen out of copyright in 1985. I don't think that endless revisions and republications make any difference here. Quite how this works with a book that has multiple authors and illustrators, I don't know but it might make a useful and informative topic for uk.legal.moderated!
