Telephone extension wiring

Probably a silly question, but ...

Looking at Peter Parry's excellent UK telephone wiring pages, the wiring of an extension from the master is fine, so also the wiring of a second extension from the first.

Question - does the wiring for the second extension box have to come from the first extension box, or can both (or more) be wired directly from the master, i.e. star wiring?

Thanks.

No

Yes

but bear in mind that IDC punchdown connectors are only designed to take two wires each, so if you want to make more connectinos than that then you will require a joint box.

In my last house I had one master socket and an extension off that. An extension off that extension and an extension off that other extension. Never had any problems. I have heard of people having problems with their ADSL connection though due to some problem with extensions so if you use ADSL then it's worth checking the connection with each added extension.

There is a limit to the number of wires you can add to the master socket, which is why most diagrams show daisy-chained connections. I have got my extensions wired using a single link from the master to a junction box. From the junction box are three connections. Two on the same floor end in slave sockets. The other link goes upstairs where it feeds two bedroom sockets, daisy-chained. It all works perfectly provided the number of concurrently connected devices doesn't exceed REN4.

No, and yes.

Star wiring is easier for fault finding and if you want to put in a small PBX at a later date.

Wish I'd known this - think I've got about three connected in this way. ;-)

Your standard BT IDC terminal is actually designed to take upto 4 wires IIRC.

Didn't know the actual number, but it was more than two by observation. After one, makes no difference how many if there's room for them.

Provided they are all the same diameter core. Start mixing different ones and trouble is likely to occur, especially of the smaller dia core is between two larger ones or on top above two larger ones. Maybe not at installation time just let atmosspheric water and oxygen work for a bit first.

Well, yes, but I'd say this might apply to just two of different sizes.

However, I'd only use telephone wire for telephones anyway.
