Structural Insulated Panels - SIP - Anybody used them?

I'm awaiting planning permission approval for a 'single storey rear extension' and 'rooms in roof with gable end' [change from hipped roof].

After the 'Grand Design' show, and watching USA TV program(m)es such as 'This Old House'; I'm interested in utilising SIP to realise the design.

I know that my council has given permission for, at least, one new build utilising this technology.

I've browsed the manufacturer's website and that of a building company 'affiliated' to the SIP maker.

Has anybody got any current experience with SIP?

The planners are generally not interested in the construction method. Although a house with an "eco" label, as SIPs would give the house, would be treated differently and have a good chance where others would not.

They keep the place air-tight and offer very high insulation levels. You may want to have interior walls made of dense block to add thermal mass, or add

2" of sand to the ceiling space too.

Look at this book: Building with Strucutural Insulated Panels (SIPs): Strength and Energy Efficiency Through Structural Panel Construction By Michael Morley ISBN: 1561583510

Synopsis

Structural insulated panels are sandwiches of foam insulation between two sheets of fibreboard or plywood, and are used to build walls, roofs and floors in all kinds of modern buildings: instead of three components - a frame, insulation and sheathing - SIP panels are all three things and come ready to install. SIP- constructed buildings are vastly more efficient, quicker to build, stronger, quieter and more draught-free than older post-war building systems. Taps into a huge and growing self-build market which is generally only served by technical books.; Tips and information on this highly efficient building material from an expert builder who specialises in structural insulated panel construction. Packed with 180 colour photographs and 40 drawings.; Takes the reader through the entire process of building a panel-constructed house, from planning and estimating, ordering, storage and handling to construction.
