The 6502's I/O was all memory mapped, via devices such as the 6522. the Motorola 6820 GPIO was also often used. 'where it sat' depended on how you decoded the \CS

Registers are in the CPU. RAM is external to it. (And I know that ROM is also RAM, but RAM usually refers to volatile memory.)
Well not necessarily. The TMS9900 used RAM based registers
So what is NVRAM then? Sheesh.
I used to have a PDP-10 price list. By default the registers were the first the 16 words of core; semiconductor registers were extra.
