It does sound rather dodgy! The claimed speed is "50 Megabytes Per Second" which is absolute rubbish for a real SSD.

Doesnt say if the actual SSD is (even assuming its a SSD) is SATA 3 / 6 Gbyte /s - which means the USB-C and USB 3 stuff might not be relevant.

Theres no actual performance figures anywhere in their reply or on the Amazon listing

I bought one which looked like that from eBay. It read as 4TB but would only copy IIRC 100GB. Checking with some software I can't remember the name of, it was in fact only about 100GB.

Inside was an adaptor PCB to a normal memory stick which was I think a reject 128GB device.

Of course I had a refund.

(probably a fake at that price anyway - it will probably have some flash storage, and will likely report that amount of free space, but it is pretty unlikely that it will actually have 4TB)

I think it might be genuine. Argos do similar for £99, so ballpark, for a bargain-basement, cutout the retailer, price.

I don't understand how they differ from standard SSDs, but there have been similar around for a few years.

Argos or Amazon, I wouldn't rely on it working for a long time, but it might.

Even the slowest no-name 4Tb SSD would probably be priced at £200+

P.S. If this thing was a HDD pretending to be an SSD, it would need a separate power lead - which this doesn't have.

Personally, I admire their honesty and openness.

SSD prices are only going to go in one direction... and that is upwards...

There is a worldwide shortage of HDDs caused by the AI datacentre buildout boom. The AI centre owners are now using SSDs which in turn is forcing up SSD prices and apparently the next 2 years supply of HDDs and SSDs are earmarked for the AI boom.

If there is a SSD shortage, then expect NVME prices and demand to shoot upwards.

Motherboard ram is also expensive now too

That's a pretty good speed for a imaginary storage device with no reviews.

Here, we have a video, plus a post-video disclaimer that the video maker <snicker> later discovers that the device has an SD inside it.

No, that is a traditional spinning rust HDD...

Electromechanical, not flash memory based.

A 2.5" HDD doesn't need a separate PSU. My guess is this is a used HDD mechanism harvested from a scrap machine in a new case.
