Square tap hole..

I have an old basin which has square holes for the taps. The taps that were removed (Faulty) have a square base which fits into the square hole...the idea being to stop the taps revolving.

The replacement taps are the standard ones that fit round holes. They came with rubber washers that fit between the tap and the basin to stop the tap rotating...

The only problem is that over time the rubber washer disappears down the square hole, which is slightly bigger than the normal round hole, and the taps become loose!

Has anyone had this problem before and how did you solve it? Is there some sort of adaptor available? Unfortunately taps with square bases seem long obsolete.

I'm sure you can get little plastic devices for this from the sheds.

The only thing I have seen are top hat washers which don't quite fit.

That's what I was thinking of. When I changed some of our taps the round spiggoted taps were padded with some heavy duty mastic-like substance. It's pretty 'orrible stuff to remove but it seemed to do the job.

What about putting a steel washer under the rubber washer and using your super-strength to tighten it all up?

I used two of the hard plastic washers both above and below the sink hole and tightened down using a socket, the taps are still nice and solid.
