Source for Plywood

I want a small piece (500mm square would be fine) of thin ply (3/4 mm) - preferably birch.

Looked at various search engines, etc. but cannot think where to find any. From a historical perspective, High Wycombe should be groaning with suppliers - but I can't find any that look promising for such a tiny amount. And of course I don't want to use much petrol for such a small quantity.

Am I missing an obvious place to look? I don't think the sheds usually have birch (mostly some anonymous tropical hardwood).

You aren't going to be able to find this so you may as well stop looking - you are being too specific.

Yes it is available, but only usually by special order, and even then, only usually in 8ft by 4ft sheets.

Any particular reason why it has to be birch? - once you've discounted this, finding the size will be easy - most sheds will have offcuts fairly cheap.

Yes - to match up with some birch furniture.

Managed to find several BIG suppliers (e.g. ) but had hoped for somewhere that sells it on.

Birch may be a problem, but phone / cycle around your local wood merchants and ask if they have offcuts.

Glaziers may also have offcuts from boarding up, but probably not that thickness.

Would a birch veneer do ? My dad used to do a lot of veneer on ply for his furniture making.

not 3/4" 6mm is the max usually.

No - that was 3 or 4 mm not 3/4 inch. So they might be good. But I think the last OK one closed sometime last year. :-(

Oh. No problem then. You can get 3x1 sheets or 1x1 sheets from any decent model shop. Mind you thats a shade under 500mm. Hmm. You need a boatbuilder, or go to a specialist supplier.

and phone em.

Most will do mail order as well.

I could probably find the nearest as well.

If I knew where you were...

Still in High Wycombe. (As in OP :-)

slecuk's site was being updated and doing *very* silly things. Will try again later.

Size is not that critical - anywhere near would be usable.

Thanks.

model shops usually have 1 foot squares or 1 foot by 3 foot that some will cut down for you, 0.5mm to about 10mm are the usual sizes, and you used to have a model shop next to B&Q down the London road and I believe there is another one not been to it though

Yes - that looks possible - and that zettai search thingy is funny. Asked for Buckinghamshire and got a mishmash of various counties.

Thanks - will have to check further tomorrow.

No idea if they stock it though. There's a big one in Oxford I think, and West London Models In Harlington.

Also kidlington IIRC.

Oh, they promised a year ago it would be live in a week..haha. Nothing has changed since then.

3x1 sheet then. About 4.50 IIRC.

Thanks again. I quite often go through Studley - there's a garden centre there. :-)
